Recently, my Dutch foreign exchange student, Bas Bouwman, accompanied me for a day on the Deschutes River. We biked along the river for about five miles before beginning our days journey. Bas had never fly fished before, but he was a tremendous student. Of all the first timers I have guided Bas made more progress by the end of the day than anyone I have ever taken. In fact, he hooked several gorgeous Redsides, including one pushing 17". It was a particularly beautiful day and we were able to hook trout on the surface and underneath. I will miss Bas next year, as he was a tremendous student to have in class. I wish all young people had a passion for life similar to Bas. Good luck Bas on your University studies upon your return to the Netherlands.
I thank God for a great young man like Bas.
Funniest thing Bas said, "I am 6' 3" tall, no seriously, seriously I am!" Yeah Bas, I still haven't seen the measuring tape;)
